Online threats, harassment, and digital exploitation are often discussed in the context of teenagers and young users. However, the reality is that anyone can become a target in today’s digital environment, even people who have never engaged with the online spaces where these attacks originate.

The following testimony comes from an individual who asked to remain anonymous. Their experience illustrates how quickly online harassment can escalate and how devastating the consequences can be for families who suddenly find themselves at the center of false accusations, doxxing, and digital intimidation.

The First Messages

In October of 2023, the individual began receiving text messages from unknown numbers.

At first, the messages were vague. They simply stated his name or asked if he had “time to chat.” Because the messages came from numbers he did not recognize and provided no explanation or context, he chose not to respond.

He explains that he has always avoided replying to unknown numbers, especially when the sender does not introduce themselves or explain why they are contacting him.

Over time, the messages became longer and more aggressive.

Some of the texts began accusing him of being a “bad man,” and included threats such as:

“I know how bad of a man you are. If you don’t respond everyone will know.”

Despite the threats, he continued to ignore the messages.

The Harassment Expands to His Family

The situation escalated when the unknown individuals began contacting his wife.

The messages sent to her included accusations that he was abusive to their children and claimed he was a dangerous person. At the same time, he began receiving additional messages accusing him of physically and sexually abusing his children.

Many of these accusations were accompanied by screenshots of conversations supposedly taking place on online platforms, along with usernames he had never seen before.

At this point, the couple decided to contact local law enforcement.

Contacting the Police

They filed a police report documenting the harassment and were advised to:

  • Not engage with the messages
  • Block the numbers sending them
  • Save screenshots of all communications

The police suggested that the situation was likely related to sextortion or online harassment.

However, they also explained that cases like these are difficult to investigate. The individuals behind them often hide their identities using VPN services or software that changes phone numbers frequently.

Local police departments also noted that smaller jurisdictions often lack the resources needed to conduct extensive investigations into online harassment cases.

Escalating Phone Calls and Threats

Around this time, the couple began receiving numerous phone calls from different numbers, including some from outside the country.

Most of the callers did not leave messages, but a few did.

Some of the voice messages again threatened to release personal information unless payment was made. Others continued repeating accusations and telling his wife that he was a “horrible evil man.”

The Email That Changed Everything

A few weeks later, the situation escalated dramatically.

The man, his wife, and several members of his extended family received an email from an unknown address. The sender claimed to be him.

In the message, the sender wrote:

“I am a pedophile, abusing my children and here is the proof.”

The email included a hyperlink to a website known as Doxbin, a site that has been associated with posting personal information online.

Realizing the potential damage the message could cause, he immediately contacted everyone who had received the email. He warned them not to open any messages or links sent under his name and explained that his identity had likely been compromised.

A Visit From Child Protective Services

Shortly before Christmas, Child Protective Services arrived at the family’s home.

They informed the couple that they had received allegations claiming the man was abusing his children. The CPS investigator also showed screenshots of the same conversations that had previously been sent to him through Facebook.

The man and his wife cooperated fully with the investigation. They explained the situation, provided information about the police report they had filed, and shared the evidence they had collected.

After reviewing the information, the CPS caseworker eventually closed the inquiry, stating that nothing had been found to support the allegations.

Although this brought a moment of relief, it was short-lived.

Contact From the FBI

Less than a week later, the man received a call from the local FBI field office asking him and his wife to come in for questioning about certain Facebook posts.

Before attending the meeting, he retained a criminal defense attorney.

The lawyer explained that situations like this occur more frequently than the public realizes and advised him to contact him immediately if the questioning became uncomfortable.

The couple went to the FBI office on a Saturday morning.

They were separated into different rooms for questioning.

Two Very Different Interviews

Later, the couple realized that their experiences during the interview were very different.

His wife reported that her conversation lasted approximately 30 to 45 minutes and involved general questions about the situation. According to her, the FBI agent told her that cases like this happen often and that it did not appear he was being heavily investigated.

In contrast, the man’s experience was far more intense.

He was interrogated for more than two hours.

Agents showed him pages connected to the Doxbin link and asked numerous questions about several online platforms, including:

  • Twitter
  • Roblox
  • Doxbin
  • Discord
  • Telegram

He explained that he had never used or even heard of several of these platforms, particularly Roblox, Doxbin, and Telegram.

The agents informed him that these platforms are sometimes used by individuals attempting to solicit illegal content involving minors.

A Case of Mistaken Identity

According to investigators, the only apparent connection between him and the accusations was a similarity between his Twitter username and another person’s username.

The other individual reportedly had more than a dozen variations of that username across multiple platforms.

During the interview, investigators also showed him something even more disturbing.

The Doxbin page contained extensive personal information about him and his family, including:

  • Home addresses
  • Email addresses
  • Phone numbers
  • Social Security numbers

All of this information had been posted publicly online.

The agents repeatedly asked if the username belonged to him and questioned whether he had ever harmed his children.

At times, he felt that investigators were more focused on pushing him toward a confession than determining who was actually responsible.

Eventually, he requested that his lawyer be present.

After that request, the tone of the interview changed, and the questioning softened. The meeting concluded shortly afterward.

Protecting His Family

After leaving the FBI office, he again contacted his family members to warn them that their personal information had been posted online and urged them to take steps to protect their identities.

As the new year began, the text messages and phone calls gradually decreased.

But the harassment had not completely ended.

A “Swatting” Tactic

One day while at work, he received a call from his wife asking if he had ordered pizza.

He had not.

The delivery driver told her the order had been placed in his name but had not been prepaid.

When he contacted the pizza restaurant, they provided the phone number used to place the order.

When he called the number, he discovered it belonged to the police department in the town where he grew up.

Later, an attorney specializing in online harassment explained that this type of prank can be a low-level form of “swatting.”

Swatting occurs when someone contacts law enforcement and falsely reports a dangerous situation involving weapons in order to send a SWAT team to a victim’s home.

He had never heard of the tactic before.

Discovering the Source

The attorney was eventually able to identify the person responsible for spreading the information.

The individual was a 17-year-old from Nebraska who believed they were attempting to expose child predators online.

Unfortunately, the accusations were based on mistaken identity and superficial similarities between usernames.

Despite the intentions, the consequences were devastating.

The attorney was able to have the family’s personal information removed from Doxbin and other websites where it had been posted.

The Lasting Impact

By the end of the ordeal, the man had spent nearly $20,000 on legal fees.

The situation had consumed months of his life, including what should have been a joyful holiday season with his family.

The emotional stress, legal concerns, and investigations created an experience he never imagined he would face, especially given that he had never committed any of the acts he was accused of.

The experience also changed how he approaches the digital world.

He now feels far more guarded online.

He no longer posts about his children or shares personal moments from his family’s life on social media the way he once did.

Instead, he worries about who might see that information, and how it could potentially be used against him or his family.

A Reminder of the Hidden Risks of the Digital World

This story highlights an often overlooked reality of the internet: online harassment, false accusations, and digital intimidation can affect anyone.

Even individuals who have never participated in risky online behavior can find themselves targeted by misinformation, identity confusion, or malicious campaigns.

For families, it serves as a powerful reminder that digital safety is not only about protecting children, it is also about protecting personal information, reputation, and privacy in a world where online actions can have very real consequences.

At CyberSafely Foundation, we believe that awareness, education, and responsible digital behavior are essential to creating safer online environments for everyone.
